A while back, my illustrator friend and I were at an event. A pretty awful cover band covered Cheap Trick. I went to the restroom to get away from them mauling "I Want You To Want Me."
So we ended up talking Cheap Trick. I said I was a huge fan from when I was young. My friend asked me what was my favorite Cheap Trick album. He said that choosing "Live at Budokan" wasn't a valid choice for Cheap Trick. Given that, In Color is my favorite album.
But let's face facts - "Live at Budokan" - the full set version available on CD - is the Cheap Trick at their very best. They'd still have so much ahead - Rock 'n' Rule, "Dream Police," "She's Tight," "The Flame," an Elvis cover that put the original to shame . . . but that show was the sharpest edge of the knife.
Let's kick off 2026 with my favorite track off of the album . . . the live version of Southern Girls.
A side note, but the party was for a cousin of mine. When I first moved to Japan he made a comment about picturing me being chased by Japanese girls like Robin Zander. I still think about that visual image. It didn't happen that way . . . not exactly anyway . . . okay, it was close . . .
